Random Cam

image

I recently bought a new pocket camera (kodak 1033) and have decided to start carrying it around with me. There are lots of neat things going on in NYC and I rarely have a capable camera on hand.

Goto the random cam page here OR look to the right sidebar for the four newest photos in the gallery.

Road Trip Photos - Up

image

I have uploaded the Road Trip 2008 photos onto my flickr. I still need to sort through the actual bachelor party sets and upload a combined album. I also want to aggregate all the twitter posts onto a page as a road trip log.

Sound of Silence

Sound of Silence from Jim Crews on Vimeo.
As I was escaping a hot summer saturday I ducked into the NY public library. I took a seat in the back of an exhibit hall. As I was sitting down the Simon & Garfunkels song “Sound of Silence” came on and the scene above unfolded. I thought it was pretty neat and decided to film it.

Tshirts from the internet

Maybe the title should be Tshirts about the internet? Either way, every month I get a shipment of dot.com paraphernalia from startupschwag.com. I just received my 3rd shipment and so far I can only report positive things. I liked all the companys they have sent for the shirts and any cool stickers are a bonus. I believe it to be well priced at $15, especially for a web geek like myself! Below is my latest shipment with a tshirt from lijit (blog stats & search company) and the other three have recently been added to my flickr.

Wii Fit Review

Brian and I went out and picked up a Wii Fit for the dietsinreview.com diet blog. The video below is our overview of the product - we should have gone a little deeper into all the different poses and exercises but want to keep the video short.

Starting

image

Amy and I started the long process of finding, bidding on and buying an APT in the NYC area. As scary as the thought was, we made our first steps this morning. We met with a friend who works at corcoran.com and starting looking at a few places in brooklyn. We saw 2 places both were nice and we were able to explore a couple neighborhoods. We are still very much up in the air on which neighborhood or borough we even want to live in. We are going to a few more open houses tomorrow as we start to narrow in on the areas of town to refine our searches to.

So, How was it?

Sorry about leaving everyone hanging about my scottish stories! The trip was amazing. We flew into Edinburgh on the overnight flight and got in early Sunday morning. We rented a massive 9 person mercedes van (for 4 of us) to fit all of our luggage and four sets of golf clubs. We then drove to St. Andrews, about an hour and a half drive, on the wrong side of the road.

Although I don’t have any pictures yet (I will upload them when I get them from my buddy gary who brought a camera), St. Andrews was as picturesque as all the photos and golf tournaments make it out to be. The St. Andrews links trust runs the 7 courses that make up St. Andrews links with the Old Course being the oldest and most prestigious. The Old Course was formed and first played in the 15th century (although this is debated) and the first ever golf course. All the courses we played were public as are the majority of the courses in Scotland. The caddies we had, in fact, made fun of americans a bit for having such a snobbish attitude toward golf with all the country club elitist nonsense. The courses there were open for all. If you wanted to go for an afternoon walk on the Old Course with your dog - thats totally fine, just watch out for golf balls.

The Old Course was the only course that had any requirements at all to play. They required a handicap of 24 or better to play to help keep the pace of play high enough as the demand to play the course far outweighs the availability.  I, of course, had to fake my handicap as I had only played one or two real rounds of golf in my entire life much less had a real handicap. Gary got us memberships at a club in Washington State and I was able to post fake scores via the internet and they mailed me a member card with with my handicap.

Other than St. Andrews we only played one other course - the championship at Carnoustie or also known as “The Beast”. It is consistently rated in the top 5 hardest courses in the world with over 120 impossible to exit sand traps. We each had a caddie for this round, and boy did I need his help digging out my balls from every nook and cranny on the course. He didn’t give me too hard a time for my terrible play, but he did laugh when I broke the second of two clubs. The clubs I was borrowing from Amy’s dad, nonetheless. I hit two nice shots with his 6 and 7 iron and the club heads just went flying! Just what I needed.

Outside of the golfing we were able to sample many whiskeys and drink a good share of cold beer at the clubhouses. The trip was awesome and I can’t wait to put some photos up here for everyone to see!

Golfing

image

I am just about to take off on my trip to Scotland to discover my inner golfer. I am not 100% sure what I am walking into, except that it should be a trip to remember. I will post pics and a story or two when I return but until then you can look at the links below to which courses I will be playing.

Saved by a time machine

image

Been having major computer problems today. An apple update wouldn’t install correctly, safari, mail.app and finder all seemed to either be acting funny or stop working altogether.  The main issue was Safari as it renders messages for mail.app - I couldn’t even launch safari or mail. The first thing I did was delete the preferences for both applications and restarted my laptop. Nope not it. Then I grabbed another copy of Safari and replaced it with my corrupt copy. Nope not it. All safari wanted to do was crash upon starting up. I then went back into time and replaced all of the preferences with versions from a few hours ago. I did this using time machine, which backs up your hard drive once an hour in the background. After a restart everything was completely back to normal! whew. I was starting to think I might have to do a re-install of the OS - just to get safari and mail to work.

The funny thing is - this morning I was telling a co-worker that I have been using time machine for a few weeks now and haven’t gotten any benefit out of it. Now I have.

Golf

I hit the links yesterday morning at the Van Courtland golf course out in the bronx, otherwise known as “America’s oldest public course.” No idea if that is true or not but it was definitely believable after being on the course. Things were a little beat up but I think they were just perparing for the spring/summer season. I counted every stroke I took and shot a 125. I think this is the first time I actually played a full 18 holes on a real golf course. Not 18 on putt putt or 18 on a par three carnival course but 18 on a real course. Scoring aside it felt great to get outside and enjoy the weather. I am trying to get ready for my trip to scotland at the end of this month - as you can see by my score I still need plenty of preparation. I do feel much more comfortable now that I have gotten the first round out of the way. I think I could go back today and shoot 110 to 115 on the same course as I started to play much better as the round went on and I began to feel my swing out.
